Description

:icondream-agency:

old app
edit 8/1: updated info

Name: Yumi Yamanaka (山中 ゆみ)
Gender: Female
Age: 212 (looks ≈26)
Weight/Height: the world may never know / 5'4"
Rank: (Boss)
Species: Ghost/Dream Eater

Abilities:

:bulletwhite: Going Ghost - Can switch between a gas-y "ghost" state and a solid state at will. During her "ghost" state, you'll be able to see through her if you're paying attention, and she can phase through everything (with the exception of other ghostly things, i.e. other ghosts). When she's in her solid state, it's like she has a physical body. She can pull other things/people into being ghostly with her--she only has enough stamina for pulling living things for no more than an hour, while inanimate objects (i.e. books) can now be "turned" ghost for no more than 4 hours.

:bulletwhite: Telekinesis - Can lift objects weighing up to a small car. When she's using this, a gray glow will surround her hands and whatever object she's moving. She can cancel the telekinesis at any time, whether she's touching the object or not.

Weapon (if any): Throws things via telekinesis. Doesn't usually carry actual weapons on her persons.

Agency Tattoo Color/Placement: Black; on the inside of her right wrist. There's no real meaning to it, she just wanted it somewhere she could see easily without needing to show any unnecessary skin, while still being somewhat hidden.

Personality:

:bulletwhite: Introvert - Doesn't like large crowds. She would much rather hide in the library while reading a book than going to the latest party thrown by the neighborhood party ghost.

:bulletwhite: Prankster - She acquired a lot of her mother's pranking knowledge, and was encouraged by her parent to prank everyone she saw. She never found as much fun in it as her mother did (unless she's bored), but don't get on her bad side--she knows a thousand ways to make you completely regret it.

:bulletwhite: Bookworm - She's read everything from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie to Catcher in the Rye to Homestuck to One Piece to the Bible. If the library had it, she's read it.

:bulletwhite: Wise - She may not be very street smart, but she will kick your ass at trivia and being book smart. I mean, she's 212 years old and has pretty much lived in a library most of her life.

:bulletwhite: Passive Aggressive - She won't actively show her displeasure at anything, instead leaving hints everywhere. If you've recently done something she isn't comfortable with, she'll leave you hints everywhere to try to get you to stop.

:bulletwhite: Polite - Yumi is still really used to needing to talk politely to everyone. Will probably attach "-san" to the end of your last name and only call you that even if you tell her not to.

Biography:
Yumi's mother was a beautiful ghost who enjoyed playing pranks by leading people deep into the woods before disappearing, leaving her victims lost among the trees (though she always helped them back out). She also did the ol' bucket-filled-with-water-over-an-open-door trick, as well as other minor pranks, but she most enjoyed getting people lost. One day, as she searched for her next victim, she happened across a handsome man walking near her woods. She managed to lure him into the woods, and left him behind without a thought. When she went back the next day to make sure he'd gotten out safely, she was surprised to find the dream eater still where she had left him, patiently waiting for her to return. They began to talk, and she found out he was part dream eater, on a quest to rid the world of nightmares. He had heard rumors of an agency that did such a thing, and was currently searching for it. He stayed for a while, talking with her, and eventually they fell in love. A few years later, Yumi was born, but without a father--the dream eater had moved on in order to continue his personal quest.

When she wasn't being dragged by her mother to try more pranks, Yumi spent most of her first 120 years of existence haunting libraries, where she would practice going into her solid state so that she could read the books. She often heard tales from her mother of her absent father, and made it one of her life's goals to finally meet the man. After turning 120, she left to live on her own, traveling around Japan for a while in search of her father. She never found him, but she did happen across a large library in a quaint town. She moved into its attic, and was happy. She spent her days and nights reading the library's vast collection of books, pulling the rare prank when she was bored. The town soon learned to not disturb the strange girl who sat in the corner of the library, because weird things--books flying around, doors all being locked from the outside, homework going missing from misplaced backpacks--would happen when they did.

Another 60 years passed, and Yumi was still happily living in the library when a fire broke out in the cafe on the first floor. Yumi did her best to help, but without an endless supply of water to contain the fast-spreading fire, the library was burned to ashes. She managed to save a couple of books, which she had grabbed in her panic to flee, and handed them over to the distraught librarian. She stayed a bit longer to help, only to discover that many of the residents believed she had started the fire. Driven out by the residents, the ghost then left the town in search of a new place residence. She boarded a ship headed to a new country, deciding that she might as well as explore and see the places she'd spent the last 180 years reading about. The ghost spent the next 10 or so years wandering around, exploring the world. On her way to a famous library, she took a wrong turn and found herself in what at first appeared to be a college town. She wandered around, lost and slightly confused, before stumbling across the Dream Agency headquarters. She took a look around the building (without an invitation) and, learning that they were looking for members to act as nightmare hunters, decided to join in order to continue in the footsteps of the father she never knew (it didn't hurt that she had happened across the library, and was in love with the number of books).

Yumi has spent the last 20 or so years in the agency, working as a bounty hunter. A large amount of time later, she was suddenly promoted to a managerial position, though she never bothered to find out why. After the departure of the agency's much beloved ex-boss Marno, Yumi was chosen by an emergency council to be the new head of Dream Agency. They're being very hush-hush on the reasons, but Yumi's just concerned about the fact that she will actually have to work now instead of spend all day in the library.
Likes: reading, quiet places, libraries, gaining new knowledge, the dark, the cold, mint-flavored things
Dislikes: large crowds, talking, fire, annoying people, being forced to do things she doesn't want to do

Additional Information:
:bulletblack: When she's in a good mood, she starts humming random tunes.

:bulletblack: The temperature around her drops a couple of degrees no matter if she's in her human or ghost state. She has no control over this, and is usually unaware of it actually.

:bulletblack: On the other hand, if you accidentally pass through her ghost form, you'll feel as if someone turned off the heat in the middle of a snowstorm.

:bulletblack: Her favorite book is The Complacency of the Learned

:bulletblack: If she's reading a book, it's highly advised that you don't interrupt her until she stops reading. She will be very annoyed at you. Consider yourself warned.

:bulletblack: "Yumi" is one letter off from "yume" = "dream" in Japanese

:bulletblack: She's got a pretty good memory

:bulletblack: While at the library that burnt down, Yumi accidentally got sucked into a nightmare of a boy who had fallen asleep at one of the desks. She made it out as alive as a ghost could be, and feeling much better after having absorbed the nightmare's energy.

:bulletblack: Yumi's mother was previously a human who had died waiting for her lover to arrive to a midnight rendezvous in the woods…she got lost getting to her destination and the lover never showed up, but she stayed there waiting for him until her death about a week later (she accidentally ate a poisonous berry while scavenging for food). It's been a long time since her death, however, and she no longer remembers why she stays in the woods, though she has a strange dislike for all of the berries in the woods.

:bulletblack: Yumi doesn't have to eat, but eating physical foods helps speed up energy recovery, so she does every so often to keep her energy up.

:bulletblack: She tenses up when she sees fire, no matter how small the flames are.

:bulletblack: She keeps her room fairly dark, with small Christmas-esque lights lit when she is in the room so she can read instead of sleep. I had a legit reason for her keeping her room dark but I forgot so I'll edit this when I remember

:bulletblack: She basically lives in the library. Can't find her? Probably in the library. Not at an important meeting? Probably skipped it to stay in the library. Hasn't been in her room in a while? Probably been in the library past few days. She spends more time reading than doing actual work. Now that she's the boss, she's spending a large amount of her time working out her duties as the boss instead of staying in the library all the time. She's discovered that there are a lot of things wrong with the way the agency is being run (like the atrocity that is the dining hall menu) and is slowly working her way through them to make the agency an agent-friendlier place.

:bulletblack: Those are white carnations on her kimono. She has a couple of kimonos (and some modern clothes), I just felt like giving her a black kimono for the app picture.

Relationships:
:bulletred: Marno: The boss. The very cranky boss who gets on her case about not doing her work. Who told him to promote her anyways? It wasn't like she was doing all that much during those 20 something years anyways...well, might as well as get some work done to appease him.

:bulletred: Chusi: An interesting individual, to say the least. She seems to be an avid reader too, as well as a writer, though her tastes in genres is...questionable, at the moment. Calls her "Chusi-san" only because what the heck is her last name.

:bulletred: Melos: ..."Fatale-san" really needs to control his temper. She is often confused as to how he could be in the same managerial position as she is, and still have the temper of a 10-year-old. Ah well, the workings of the world is quite strange to say the least.

:bulletred: Yin: "Tian-san", Yumi isn't quite sure what to make of this dragon boy quite yet. His personality is quite refreshing, especially if you have to deal with the agency's two hot-headed males in positions of power.

:bulletred: Min Su: "Min Su-san" she finds nice. She hopes the boss will stop beating on him to work more, even during breaks. The poor kid looked so distraught the second time she met him, though.
